Details

There have been many anecdotal reports over the last couple of decades linking the acne treatment Roaccutane with depression. Last year a study showed that administration of the drug to mice caused depressive type behaviour. In a new ‘test-tube’ study, researchers have identified a possible mechanism for this side-effect. They believe that the action of Roaccutane may reduce the amount of the good mood neurotransmitter serotonin that’s available for the nerve cells.

Our comment: This research is not conclusive, however, since teenage acne often responds well to nutritional therapy – there are often nutrient deficiencies contributing to the condition – a try nutritional therapy for at least six months before looking at drug treatment.
