Essential fats reduce ADHD-related symptoms in children with specific learning difficulties. A. Richardson & B. Puri, Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry, 26(2), 233-9, 2002

Details

The effects of essential fat supplementation on children with ADHD-related symptoms was explored. Forty-one children aged 8-12 years with both specific learning difficulties and above average ADHD-ratings participated in the study. The children were randomly assigned to receive either fatty acid supplementation or placebo for a 12 week period. both groups scored the same on a standardized parent rating scale that was used to assess a range of behavioural and learning problems associated with ADHD. After 12 weeks the group who had been given the essential fats showed significant differences in learning and behavioural aspects when compared to the placebo group. The study suggests that essential fat supplementation reduces ADHD-related symptoms in children with specific learning difficulties.
