Details

Many people struggle to get a good night’s sleep as they get older.  This study involved 43 older adults (age 70’s) living in a long-term care facility who had primary insomnia (primary meaning that it was not due to a separately identified issue). The residents were given a supplement containing 5mg melatonin, 225mg magnesium, and 11.25mg zinc, mixed with 100g of pear pulp or a placebo (100g of plain pear pulp) every day for 8 weeks, one hour before bedtime. A variety of measures were taken to monitor their ability to get to sleep, sleep quality, levels of daytime sleepiness and so on. Significant improvements were seen in all these measures in the group taking the supplements.
