Supplementation with folic acid enhances effect of antidepressant medication. Coppen & Bailey, J Affect Disord, 60(2):121-30, 2000

Details

127 depression patients received either 500 mcg of folic acid or a placebo in addition to 20mg of the SSRI antidepressant fluoxetine. Blood levels of folate and homocysteine were measured at the beginning and again after 10 weeks. Overall there was a significantly greater improvement in those n the fluoxetine plus folic acid, with greater improvements in women.  Those on the folic acid also reported fewer medication related side effects.
