Food for the Brain Conference 2011 - Speakers

Professor David Smith DPhil FMedSci was Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford for 21 years. He co-founded the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing (OPTIMA), which has become a world-renowned centre for the study of dementia. Over the last two years OPTIMA has been carrying out groundbreaking research into the impact of levels of homocysteine in individuals with age-related memory decline. The team recently published their findings showing how supplementation of B vitamins halved the rate of brain atrophy in those with raised homocysteine levels and mild cognitive impairment, the precursor of the Alzheimer's/dementia. Professor David Smith is Chairman of Food for the Brain's Scientific Advisory Board.

Dr Andrew McCaddon MB ChB MRCGP MD is a full-time GP in Wrexham and has had an active research interest in homocysteine and cognition for more than 20 years. In 2003 he received an MD with Distinction from Sheffield University for his Thesis entitled “Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Alzheimer’s Disease.” He was also awarded the 2010 William Farr Medal by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in recognition of his significant research contributions concerning the care of elderly patients. Andrew is also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the School of Medicine, Cardiff University and a Visiting Professor at Chester University.

Dr Marcus Richards PhD is a programme leader at the Medical Research Council for Lifelong Health and Learning. His work is concerned with cognitive function. This includes the influence of early experience, nutrition and growth, education, adult socioeconomic status, mobility and health behaviours. His area of interest is in the interaction between cognitive function, physiological function and mental health.

Patrick Holford BSc DipION FBANT NTCC is a leading spokesman on nutrition in the media, specializing in the field of mental health. He is author of over 30 books, translated into more than 20 languages including the Feel Good Factor, Optimum Nutrition for the Mind and the Alzheimer’s Prevention Plan, co-authored with Deborah Colson. He is chief executive of the Food for the Brain Foundation and director of the Brain Bio Centre. He is also an honorary fellow of the British Association of Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy, and a member of the Nutrition Therapy Council.

Deborah Colson DipION MBANT NTC CNHC is a nutritional therapist who trained at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition. She specialises in the nutritional treatment of mental health conditions at the Brain Bio Centre, the outpatient clinic of Food for the Brain. Deborah co-authored Optimum Nutrition for Your Child and The Alzheimer’s Prevention Plan. She is currently studying for a nutrition-related MSc at CNELM (validated by Middlesex University).
